Humans of The Tribe: Gideon, A Rising Star in Ugandan Tourism

Some people grow alongside The Tribe so naturally that it feels impossible to imagine the journey without them.

I first met Gideon back in 2018, 10 years after my first trip to Uganda. At the time, we were running a small DJ workshop, introducing three young guys to the decks. Gideon was the youngest - and he stood out immediately.

He was focused. Curious. Full of energy. And quietly determined.

Gideon had lost his father a few years earlier, but there was never any sense of self-pity. Just a deep hunger to learn, to improve, and to keep moving forward. Even then, there was something special about him - not just in music, but in everything he committed himself to.

When the world shut down in 2020, Gideon didn’t.

While everything else paused, he practised DJ-ing in his bedroom using the controller we’d left behind. By November that year, he was live on the radio, mixing and hosting his own show.

Over the years, we stayed closely connected. Every time I returned to Uganda, we’d meet - and each time, I saw more growth. More confidence. More clarity. When Gideon completed secondary school, he knew exactly what he wanted to do next.

Tourism.

In February 2024, Gideon joined The Tribe Uganda Experience as a student guide, under the exceptional mentorship of our lead guide, long-standing tour partner, and dear friend, Martin. Within days, every guest had fallen in love with him.

His warmth. His attentiveness. His ability to listen, learn, and lead with humility. Gideon wasn’t just doing the job - he was thriving in it.

At the same time, he was continuing his university studies in Tourism and Hospitality Management, and we’ve shared every step of that journey together - each semester, each set of results, each milestone. From passing exams, to completing internships, to proudly passing his driving test.

Each message comes with the same quiet gratitude and drive to keep going.

Today, Gideon is in the midst of a 21-day Tourist Guiding placement with the Africa Institute of Tourism and Field Guiding, based in and around Lake Mburo and Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks.

His daily updates say everything about the guide he is becoming.

Early starts. Long walks. Field research. Listening to communities. Observing wildlife. Learning how tourism, conservation, and livelihoods intertwine.

“I carefully wrote everything in my notebook so nothing important was missed,” he shared after a day spent interviewing community members near the Uganda - Congo border.

Another day brought mountain gorilla tracking - a lifelong dream - as he joined tourists to visit the Nyakagezi family, the only gorilla family in the park.

“It was absolutely breathtaking,” he wrote. “Seeing them up close was a dream come true.”

What stands out most isn’t just what Gideon is learning - it’s how he approaches it. With respect. With curiosity. With attention to every detail. One of his field assessments was based entirely on observation - signs, timings, behaviours, things easily missed if you’re not fully present.

That instinct can’t be taught.

Very soon, Gideon will return to university for his final year, before graduating and stepping fully into his career as a tour guide.

And next month, in February 2026, Gideon will once again join The Tribe Experience - this time as a powerful example for students from the UK, joining our next Tribe Student Experience.

They will meet someone who once stood exactly where they are now. Someone who worked, studied, showed up every day, and kept saying yes to learning. Someone who proves what’s possible when opportunity meets commitment.

As our student experiences grow, Gideon is an integral part of the team - not just as a guide, but as an inspiration. A living example of where these journeys can lead.

For the many Tribe students yet to visit Uganda, what better way to experience, and learn about, the Pearl of Africa - guided and educated by Gideon, under the mentorship of Martin.

Gideon’s story is everything Humans of the Tribe is about.

Not quick wins. Not one-off experiences. But long journeys, shared growth, and community built over time.

And for Gideon, this is only the beginning.

What a privilege the last eight years have been - watching his journey unfold as he grows into an exceptional tour guide, leading with passion, humility, and heart.
